Day 1

Arrival in Copenhagen. Arrive at your hotel and free time to explore The Bike Capital of the World. Visit to Nyhavn, the Royal Castle, Christiania or the amusement park Tivoli.

Overnight stay in the centre of Copenhagen.

Day 2

Copenhagen to Snekkersten/Helsingør. Approx. 50 km/32 US Miles.

Biking through Copenhagen is a fantastic tour start. You will follow the cycle path along the coastline enjoying the magnificent view to Sweden, passing the Little Mermaid and the Queen’s residence Amalienborg. Enjoy the sight of the fashionable houses and pass by the famous beach “Bellevue” before continuing to Dyrehaven, the Royal hunting grounds, with century old trees and herds of deer. Located here is also “Bakken”, the oldest amusement park in the world. In Rungsted you pass Karen Blixen’s house and museum, “Rungstedlund” and in Humlebæk you can take a look at the Museum of Modern Art “Louisiana”, or make lunch and coffee stops at the marinas along the route overlooking the water. You will end up in Snekkersten, formerly a fishing village, close to Helsingør.

(Rungstedlund is closed on Mondays except in July/August. Louisiana is always closed on Mondays, but if you wish to see the exhibition it is only a short way back from Snekkersten).

Overnight stay in Snekkersten or Helsingør.

Day 3

Tour to Sweden and/or the highlights of Helsingør. 31-55-78 km/19-34-48 US Miles + Ferry.

Highly recommended is the 2 km ride from Snekkersten to Helsingør and the impressive Kronborg Castle (renowned from Shakespeares play Hamlet) and the historical city centre.

Also the Danish Maritime Museum listed on the New York Times’ list:”52 places to go in 2014” is a “must” because of its fantastic architecture and exciting exhibition. If those attractions take your time don’t worry. You can choose between 3 stages in Sweden, if you are in lack of time. On the longest stage you cycle to the rocky peninsula “Kullen”, but you can also choose shorter stages. The ferry to Sweden runs every 15 minutes, price €8 (not included) for a roundtrip.

Overnight stay in Snekkersten or Helsingør.

Day 4

Snekkersten/Helsingør to Hillerød. 60-75 km/ 37-47 US Miles.

Hornbæk with nice restaurants and the best beach on the North coast is your first stop today. You will continue with gentle ups and downs – sometimes close to the beach sometimes through the dunes overlooking the sea to the charming village of Gilleleje. Head into the woodlands following the bike unpaved trail to the large forest, Grib Skov, where the King of Denmark had his hunting grounds in the past and along Esrum Lake. Today’s destination is Hillerød, with an old and picturesque city center and the beautiful Frederiksborg Castle – through the time residence for many Danish kings.

Longer alternative: Keep cycling along the coast to Tisvildeleje – the gate to the National Park of Tisvilde Hegn, and a popular summer seaside resort. From here you follow the regional cycle route to Hillerød.

Overnight stay in Hillerød.

Day 5

Hillerød to Roskilde. 47 km/29 US miles.

From the rural countryside you head for the Roskilde Bay, where you will find charming stops for a break. Roskilde is yet another highlight on the tour. The Cathedral in Roskilde is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds 38 burial plots of Danish kings and queens. Do not forget to visit the harbour where you can see the Viking Ship Museum, the Viking Ships and the boat yard.

Overnight stay in Roskilde.

Day 6

Roskilde to Copenhagen. 46 km/28 US miles.

Today you will return to the coast side while approaching Copenhagen from southwest. You will ride through picturesque villages to the beaches south of the capital. A path takes you along the coast, away from the traffic, all the way to the centre of Copenhagen. Along the way you will pass “Arken” – a museum of modern art, the island “Amager” with the Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood, and Christianshavn and several interesting architectural sights when you cycle along the canal between Zealand and the island Amager.

Overnight stay in the Centre of Copenhagen.

Day 7

Check out or use the possibility to extend your stay with a few additional days in Copenhagen. You can choose extra nights at your hotel or you can join one of our other bike tours.
